Here you can find the general quality assurance plan for assistant professorships with tenure track of the University of Tübingen.

The individual evaluation criteria for each of the positions can be found right after the respective tender offer.

As of spring 2018, the new Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act will include the category of Tenure Track Professorship in § 51b. Until then, the term used is "assistant professor with tenure track." Therefore it is possible for people who hold such a W1 positions to call themselves and be called tenure-track professors. The calls for applications published on this part of the website are to fill such Tenure Track Professorships. It is possible to receive supplements to the basic salary for W1 positions and, thus, also for Tenure Track professors.

Tenure-Track Professor of Art History (Early Modern)

to commence as soon as possible.

Requirements for applicants are an outstanding PhD dissertation as well as research and teaching that go beyond the PhD. The holder of the position is expected to have a research focus on early modern art (from 1500-1800). A proven interest in the field of spatial art and/or architectural history are desirable. In addition to participation in the department’s teaching, the ability and willingness to cooperate on an interdisciplinary basis and, in particular, to participate in interdisciplinary programs and research networks (esp. the CRC 1391) as well as relevant university centres within the faculty and beyond are expected.

This position is initially limited to four years, with the possibility of an extension by a further two years in case of a positive interim evaluation. The position has a teaching load of four hours per week prior to interim evaluation, and six hours thereafter. This tenure-track professorship will be upgraded to a full (W3) professorship with no re-advertising of the position. The appointment prerequisites of § 51 LHG apply.
Those who have completed a habilitation will be excluded.

Evaluation Criteria for the Transition of the W1 tenure-track Professorship of of Art History (Early Modern) to a W3

1) Research performance:

a) The writing of a monograph/a second book (in addition to the doctoral thesis).

Publication of the monograph or presentation of a manuscript of usually at least 250 pages, to be externally assessed in the final evaluation. 

The monograph must be proof that the author has conducted comprehensive research in at least one further thematic field in this subject or discipline in addition to that dealt with in the doctoral thesis.

For the interim evaluation: Presentation of parts of the monograph manuscript and / or precise and verifiable documentation of the work completed so far (e.g. preparation of archive material, review of other types of sources, empirical studies etc.), further detailed outline of the work still to be done, table of contents/ structure of monograph and timetable for completion. In addition, presentation of at least one further publication or of a manuscript fully prepared for publication.

b) At least two publications in high-level peer-reviewed journals or high-level edited volumes, one of which must be on a different topic from that of the monograph and doctoral thesis, as well as at least 4 other publications (this may include publications from no. 7 below)

2) Teaching across the full spectrum of the advertised position

Above-average teaching assessments. It is expected that, by the end of the junior professorship, the spectrum of classes taught includes all types (lectures, seminars, exercises/ practical work, participation in assessment) in accordance with the breadth of requirements of the subsequent W3 professorship.

For the interim evaluation: Above-average teaching assessments. Proof that new fields of teaching have been explored.

3) Independent third-party funding initiatives (extramural)

Third-party funding may include not only research projects with funded positions, but also: Obtaining one’s own research scholarship or a similar format, which may lead to a leave of absence without pay within the framework of the junior professorship; this may include third-party payments for guest professorships/ fellowships financed, for example, by the Humboldt Foundation; third-party funding for large conferences.

We expect serious applications whose quality can be assessed; in the event that unfortunate circumstances mean that all applications are rejected, this does not automatically mean that this evaluation criterium has not been met.

Independent in this case means: As the sole responsible or chiefly responsible member of a project or subproject, i.e. not, for instance, as part of a joint project or subproject with a more experienced or equally experienced project manager within the University. Joint projects with representatives of other universities are possible. Extramural in this case means: External third-party funding in which internal assessment processes do not play a role.

4) National and international cooperations

These must be documented, for example through lectures/presentations, conferences etc.

5) Supervision of academic theses

This comprises the supervision of MA and BA theses and supervision within the framework of doctoral theses. After six years, the completed supervisions of BA and MA theses outside of the narrower research area are expected as much as the participation in the supervision of doctoral theses. Responsibility for the task of first supervisor of a doctoral process and possibly the completion of this thesis need only be proven if the W1 professorship includes a position for a doctoral researcher. Otherwise, participation in doctoral supervision (examiner's report, doctoral colloquium, second supervisor) is sufficient.

6) Successful personal contribution to committees and administration in more than one area

The ability to successfully carry out tasks in this area independently and on one’s own responsibility must be evidenced, in accordance with the tasks of a W3 professorship. This also includes the integration into the development of courses of studies as well as the membership in interfaculty committees. It is not sufficient to merely be a member of search committees. 

For the interim evaluation: Evidence of work in an area or concrete plans.

7) Evidence of transfer activities into society

Transfer activities comprise, for instance, lectures/publications/projects outside of academia, representation of the discipline for a wider public. Activities in this area need to be evidenced. 

For the interim evaluation: no concrete evidence necessary at this stage.

8) Knowledge of the German language

The ability to teach in German must be proven as well as to take on administrative tasks. The achievement of level C1 is expected.

All criteria must be met. Criteria 3, 4, 6 and 7 have been met, however, if the candidate has carried out independent, successful work in the area and more may be expected to follow. Activities above and beyond the requirements in these areas are not expected; nor can they be used to compensate a lesser performance under criteria 1 and 2 under any circumstances. Broader activity is expected under criteria 2 and 5. The department is responsible for ensuring that you have enough time available for your own research work (criterion 1).

The position is initially limited to four years, with the possibility of extension by a further two years after a positive interim evaluation.
The successful candidate will be expected to take part in teaching the Institute’s Bachelors and Masters programs. The position has a teaching load of four hours per week prior to interim evaluation, and six hours thereafter. The successful candidate will carry out independent research activities in the field of diachronic linguistics, pragmatics, or in contact linguistics. The core areas of the work should be in the area of French and in another Romance language - preferably Spanish. The holder of this position will be expected to participate in both linguistics-focused and interdisciplinary collaborative projects.
This position provides the opportunity and expectation that, in the course of the contract, the W1 Professor will attain the research and teaching achievements that will qualify him or her for a subsequent appointment as a tenured professor at a university or equivalent institution.
Required qualifications include an outstanding doctorate in a pertinent field, noted publications, and teaching experience. The appointment prerequisites of § 51 LHG apply.

The following position is available in the Department of Linguistics beginning January 1st, 2026.
Academic Councillor non-tenured (German: Akademischer Rat auf Zeit) (m/f/d; grade A 13)

The position is to be filled for an initial period of 3 years, with the possibility of renewal for another 3 years. The responsibilities of the position holder include teaching according to the requirements of the LVVO (two courses per semester), as well as research in the field of General Linguistics, and administrative duties.

Requirements for employment are an excellent PhD in a relevant field (linguistics, cognitive science, computational linguistics, etc.), the ability to teach in the field of General Linguistics in English, and the ability to conduct independent scientific research in the field (as evidenced, e.g., by relevant publications). A specialization in language variation, combined with quantitative methods, will be considered a plus.
